Inside Kakamega County Governor’s Wealth Creation Agenda

Kakamega county governor: Last Thursday, the second governor, FCPA Fernandes Barasa and and his deputy Ayub Savula were sworn into office. The event marked the end of the highly successful 10 year rein of the first Governor Wycliffe Oparanya. In his manifesto, he highlighted a 6 point agenda dubbed “Maendeleo na usawa“. They are Health, Sanitation and Hygiene; Education; Social Development; Good Governance; Food Security and most importantly Wealth Creation.

1. Market & Technological Linkages to Export

One of the key areas of interest to the Kakamega County Governor is the cottage industry. The export linkages are aimed at promoting demand for products, services, raw materials and across value chains. This is expected to create lots of direct and indirect jobs while positioning the county as a go-to source for quality handmade products.

If successful, the move is likely to spur growth in the juakali, pottery, furniture and welding sectors among other related subsectors. The new governor is likely to empower and work closely with the various associations like the Juakali and Potters’ associations spread across the county.

2. Motorcycle Assembly Plant

Further, on his promise to the vast Bodabodas sector employing over 300,000 people across the county, the Kakamega County Governor seeks to facilitate establishment of a motorcycle Assembly Plant. It is envisaged that the motorcycle Assembly will drive down the costs of owning a motorcycle drastically and also create many job opportunities. Moreover, the acquisition of spare parts will not only be cheaper but also allow more spare parts businesses to be setup.

Interestingly, the bodaboda sector is a huge vote basket that he can easily sway to his side. If the program succeeds!

3. Creating 10,000 new jobs

Another key aspect of the wealth creation agenda is job creation. In a span of 5 years, the county commits to produce over 10,000 jobs both directly and indirectly. Creating new jobs will cut across efforts like pushing for revival of Mumias Sugar Company – a mass employer. Other initiatives include setting up the assembly plant, promoting cottage industries, trade linkages among others.

4. Special Economic Zones & Industrial Parks

Clearly, operationalizing the industrial agenda will be the first governor’s dream through the SEZs and Industrial Parks. Governor Fernandes Barasa will seek to attract investors and companies through special tarrifs, tax incentives and other related support. Besides, the zones and parks like the one in Butere will realize lots of job creation, value chains development and improved cashflows as well.

5. Kakamega County Governor “Barasa Economic Empowerment Programme”

Ultimately, the goal of any government is to uplift the lives of its people. And what better way than economically. Therefore alive to this fact, Governor Barasa plans to setup the Barasa Economic Empowerment Programme.

Through this programme, the county will roll out initiatives aimed at creating jobs, encouraging more people to start businesses and form empowerment groups. The expected empowerment is expected to be boosted through loans from the Kakamega Microfinance Corporation, grants from participating partners and business incentives.
